Is the Enneagram reliable? Consistency explained

Reliability is about whether a test gives consistent results. This page explains the main types of reliability and what is known about Enneagram questionnaires.

Reliability in plain terms

A reliable test gives similar results when nothing important has changed. If you take a reliable measure today and again in a month, your scores should be broadly the same. Reliability does not tell you whether a test measures the right thing, which is validity, but a test cannot be valid without being reasonably reliable.

Types of reliability

TypeQuestion it answersEnneagram relevance
Test-retestDo scores stay similar over time?Key for whether your type result is stable
Internal consistencyDo items for the same type agree with each other?Shows whether a type scale hangs together
Alternate formsDo two versions of the test agree?Relevant when comparing different Enneagram tests
Inter-raterDo different typers agree?Relevant for typing interviews

What is known about Enneagram reliability

General overviews of psychological testing explain that reliability must be demonstrated for each instrument, not assumed for a framework. For the Enneagram, reliability evidence is spread across many different questionnaires. The 2021 systematic review by Hook and colleagues in the Journal of Clinical Psychology found the overall picture of reliability and validity to be mixed, with some measures performing better than others and a need for stronger studies.

In practice, this means an Enneagram result can be reasonably stable for many people while still moving between types for others, especially when scores are close.

Judging the reliability of your own result

  • Retake the same test after four to eight weeks and compare your top three types.
  • Note whether your top type stays in the same center.
  • Treat a change between neighbouring types as smaller than a change across the circle.
  • Record your circumstances each time; stress can shift answers.
  • Try a second, different test and see which types appear on both.

Reliability questions

Are Enneagram tests reliable?+

Evidence is mixed and depends on the specific questionnaire. Some produce fairly stable results; others are less tested.

Why did I get a different type when I retook the test?+

Close scores, changes in mood or circumstances and item wording can all shift results.

Is the Big Five more reliable than the Enneagram?+

Well-established Big Five measures have a much larger body of reliability research.

What reliability score is considered good?+

Standards vary by use; general testing guidance treats higher consistency as necessary for higher-stakes decisions.
